J Roman (they/them) is an award-winning Peruvian musician, mixing engineer, and composer. They started their musical journey at six years old with the acoustic guitar and now play a variety of instruments, including piano, bass, drums, and synthesizers. Immersed in Afro-Peruvian music and film scores from a young age, and studied music theory and composition at the National Peruvian Conservatory of Music. Jās love for music goes hand in hand with their passion for storytelling in film and photography, leading them to collaborate with other artists and score music for several independent films. Their work spans chamber music, computer music, sound arts, and film scoring. J is particularly dedicated to addressing social issues in their compositions and artworks, with a strong focus on LGBTQIA+ themes.
Their innovative compositions have been premiered by notable ensembles like TAK, PinkNoise, and COPE, and their film scores have been showcased internationally. They hold a Bachelorās in Music from Columbia University (2024), where they received "The Boris & Eda Rapoport Prize,ā and an Associateās in Music from Borough of Manhattan Community College (2019).
